SD Engine Number

Post by Taspiper »

One of the guys that works for me fished an old SD out of his shed for me to ogle over.
On the front facing part of the crankcase (mid top half) its stamped SD but there is no other number to go with it.
There is a number stamped in the flywheel but that's all.
Can someone point me in the right direction as to where the number may be or indeed if it's even meant to have one?
Cheers Rolf.

The number would be on that part of the crankcase that joins the drive shaft tube. Lots of motors have an embossed SD on the upper part of the top half of the crankcase. I don't know what that one means.

This photo isn't of an SD - I couldn't find one showing the serial - but the principle is the same. All British Seagull motors were stamped in the same place. So were the Marstons.

It's got no numbers on this part at all. FIIK!
That's what I expected but nothing there either side.

Lets see photos then. We can identify it from all sort of features. Coolie hat Magneto and short water jacket. That sort of thing.

You may not be able to see the bottom crankcase easily in the pics but I double checked today and there is definitely no number. The "SD" is stamped in not cast.

Rolf there's not enough detail in your pics to say for sure.
Need a much better pic of the cylinder.
But it looks 15 years later than an SD.
Make it idiot proof and someone will make a better idiot.

Photos of block and numbers on flywheel....
Maybe 8/1962 as per flywheel? 8/62 looks like a date?

There were no flywheel stamps from the factory - that's a stores number or something
It's a long water jacket block, so it's 1946 or after. The bracket is late forties/early fifties, so is the plastic water pipe.

Sadly the photos don't show that part of the crankcase - as per above - that would have had a serial if there was one.

Flat magneto with flange is mid fifties - ish. Prop from late fifties/early sixties. Brass tank with straps rather than Jubilee clips.

That is not an SD.

Photo of bit where it's stamped 'SD' ?

I don't think it's ground off as you would have to remove a fair bit because of the depth of the stamping and the profile and finish looks original.
