Had my camera out today.Daryl wrote: Any chance of some nice clear pics like you have done, of a full view of the component side & one of the copper track side looking straight down on them?

If these are not clear enough, let me know and I will have another go.
I have spoken to an OMC experts in the states, and he said a little slop in the big end bearings is normal, also the center main needles do run a little blue.
So I am now a little happier to replace the top needle, bottom ball race, and both of the seals.
He also said that if the crank or CD2 prove to be a problem, then he would send me a replacement.
There are nice people in the ouboard collecting world.

P.S. 5 is orange blue, 6 is black yellow, 7 is orange.

Thanks for that HA.

Good one H-A, nothing like the satisfaction of fixing it.

Re: Evinrude 6hp 1981 (Belgian)
Daryl do you have any views on the carbon composite resisters as don't they control the timing?
Make it idiot proof and someone will make a better idiot.
Re: Evinrude 6hp 1981 (Belgian)
Hi Charles. Those old carbon resistors realy should be changed as they will probably off value by now, but it apears to be working. They have nothing to do with timing as the base plate with the triger coil is moved by the throttle linkage, advancing the timing as the throttle is opened.

Re: Evinrude 6hp 1981 (Belgian)
They are obviously working but as there is at least one in each spark circuit & any change in resistance will change the timing of that circuit could this cause let's say, one plug to fire at 23 before & the other fire at 13 before when they're both expected to fire at 23 before with the baseplate in that throttle controlled position.
Don't most people replace these as a matter of course as after 30 years they could have changed their value by up to 100% or perhaps even gone open circuit.
Any carbon composite resister across the gate will over time, have increased in value delaying the gate release.

I will try & daw the circuit of this unit, will take awhile. The thing is probably very few people atempt to repair the modules, just that i like a chalenge to see if it can be done. H-A has done quite a reasonable job so far. Also are these modules still avalable new, or are they only avalable as new old stock or just 2hand modules. & at what price? Im of to bed soon as its getting late here.

Re: Evinrude 6hp 1981 (Belgian)
Well I am glad it works, thanks Daryl for your help.
Electronics is not my area of expertise, but I am glad to have a go with advice and help
I have measured all the resistors that I identify, the largest error I can find is o.8%.
So as the magneto base moves about 45 degrees and flops about in use, I am not bothered.
If the engine does not run well I will invest in a new CDi, they are only £60, but I am glad I got this one sparking.
If you look hard enough at any project then potential faults can be found.
Personally I just get on with it, and do it.

As somebody with very electrical understanding all I can say is TOP JOB
Very satisfying to get it going again.

Re: Evinrude 6hp 1981 (Belgian)
I ran it for 5 hours today on my local river, what a nice quiet engine.
It starts easily, smooth gear change, economical, does not smoke much, loads of power.
I have seen the OMC light, it performs and starts much better than my more modern Merc 4.

But I did take a seagull as a backup motor.
I am starting to see the benefit of twins.
