Thank you for the interest. I'm ever in search for another knot or two for may wayfarer dinghy!
The engine number is WS 1780 D2 but I have a clutched bottom end to fit to it from my trusty 40+
The 40+ and century have the same direct and clutched bottom ends according to my spares book
The clutched bottom end is 12:30 and the Direct drive bottom end 10:35. Assuming an engine speed of 3600 the clutched prop speed is 1500rpm, the direct drive prop speed 1000rpm. So the direct drive prop is a more powerful hydrofan. Boat speeds are similar - hydrofan maybe slightly faster
So with the Century I would not expect to get much more boat speed from the direct drive. I did try a friends and this was borrne out although it wasn't running very well. But with a clutched prop speed of 1500rpm (half as much again) I would expect to get a lot more boat speed assuming the same prop
NB I know about waterline length/max displacement speed
So now I know they use the same prop (I expect the boss to be slightly different for the cluth thrust washer?) am I right in expecting more speed from the clutched version rather than the direct drive version? Or does the engine speed change so that on the clutched version it only runs at 2400 rpm
Thank you for your interest.I too find the weedless "slightly better" at not attracting weed! but its the water intake that I worry about
