Help Please.

Post by twostrokenut »

Hello everyone , new to this forum , my first teaser is.... I'm attempting to convert a Seagull from long to shortshaft.
How much do I have to cut of..
A the drive shaft
B the driveshaft tube
C the cooling pipe
D the exhaust tube.

Many thanks.

This is a how long is a piece of string question.

How long do you need it to be when you've finished & how long is it now, take one from the other, & that is your answer.

Remove the same amount from all four items!

I'm assuming it's at present a " normal " longshaft , as I have another spare exhaust tube that also came from a longshaft that is of identical length , I merely want to change it to a " normal " shortshaft , just wondering how much needs removing , I've used standard shortshafts on my boat before with no problems.

Thanks for that , I'm even more confused now......... I've just measured my shaft and it's 27" long
As far as I know it's a Century , could someone with a shortshaft please tell me the length of their exhaust tube , that should give me the starting point.
Thanks Andy.

Stephen , you're obviously alot more familiar with Seagulls than me , the numbers on mine are WL 1910F7 , whatever that makes it . I have stripped this down and mechanically it seems in very good order , whereabouts in the UK are you ??

You can check out the model and age on the main website under ID your engine.
There is an easier to use but less comprehensive guide atThis site

I make it a 1967 (July) Century 100 longshaft.

(W=Century 100, L=longshaft, F7=August'67)

According to my parts list the standard drive shaft is 20¾" and the long shaft 26¾" (and are the same parts as for the 40 plus models)

So if you want to alter yours you cut 6" off all the parts you listed ie reduce the drive shaft casing from 24½ to 18½, silencer tube from 22¼ to 16¼ and the water pipe from 23½ to 17½.

BUT then the engine number will be wrong!

Vic , many thanks for that , I'm aware it will not be original , but it will only be used for a cruise on a lazy summers day , when I like to hear and enjoy some of my vintage stuff.
Again many thanks.
