Has anyone noticed that the transom clamps on te 40 Plus and Century 100 are not inline, i.e when the clamps are tightened they buckle the frame. I only noticed this when trying to remove the cross bar, loosen the clamps and the bar is easy to remove. Why would Seagull have designed it this way?

I had alot of slop in my 40+
it has very few hours so its not worn out guides at the lock pin.
so I machined bushings that fit the pin better and also fit the U slot in the bracket much better.
took all the slop out of the mount.

Te engine is of an old era, designed as a rugged, reliable little slogger.
Refinements were never contemplated. What you saw is what you got!
You cannot compare these engines with the modern day counterparts.
Just pat yourself on the back, as I do when somebody comes up to you and says "I see you have an old Seagull" "Yes" I answer with pride.

I agree with you alan,
If you want a perfectly machined outboard with perfect tolerances don't buy a seagull.
But your seagull could already be 40 years old and loose and rattly and noisy and still running, something the better machined outboards won't be doing at that age.
mine is 64 years old and still running good and rattly and noisy and leaky.
