CARBS / INSULASTIC MOUNTINGS & STUFF.

Post by bigoink »

I have a good featherweight fitted with a villiers carb ......the carb got squashed in an accident........is it ok for me to substitute a new Bing carb without any modifications anywhere (apart from the cable) : Also i found reference recently to the Seagull Insulastic permanent bolt on engine mounting (for the larger models).........how does this differ (apart from lack of thumbscrews) to the alloy thing supplied as standard ?

A Seagull Bing carb will be just fine, a direct swap. And you'll be able to run on a 25:1 mix without modification, too.

The Insulastic bracket is just as you say - pretty much identical to the alloy backing plate of the normal larger brackets. It's just made of a tough nylon or similar.

insulastic mount.

Thanks for that Charles............next question , why did they make it out of nylon /plastic ? was it to dampen engine vibes or prevent corrosion in the event of it being left in place in a saltwater environment . The reason im asking is , im about to fabricate a bracket in 316 stainless, to be left in situ , that will take both the featherweight and silver century models , i was just trying to understand seagulls train of thought when they built the insulastic mount .

my guess is that it was cheaper to use a moulded nylon bracket rather than the original cast bronze item and the fact that the plastic mount had a slight damping efect was a bonus that seagull used in its blurb.
stainless steel seems a good idea, love to see some pictures of the finished bracket.

Hi Paul ......will get some pics on to the website at some stage ........I only intended making one for myself to start with but later this year im retiring to the philippines where i will have time and manufacturing capability for small batches of items in stainless steel. I had intended to to produce one or two things for seagulls over there including tanks, drive shafts & tubes for featherweights and century series engines initially. Watch this space !
