Re: EDL Seagull - Unused
Unusual for a motor described as 'unused' for it to actually be unused! But this one certainly looks as though it is.
I haven't seen one of those for sale before, this batch was one made partially to use up the huge stocks of 102 cylinders and gearboxes held as spares stock by British Seagull, and many regard it as being one of the best motors to come out of the factory.

Looks very nice, certainly looks in mint condition . What kind of value would we be looking at? I'm asking you guys for your opinion rather than ask the seller. I would say if it was on ebay as an auction it would depend on what an individual thinks it's worth to him, but if it was in a shop window, what price would you guys think would be a good valuation.

I'm told by a couple of members who've phoned the guy & made an offer that the vendor is making this an "auction" so keep making your offers & at the end of the week the highest bidder will own it.
Spider it's very difficult to value something like this as there aren't that many about, I've never seen one before with a welded up exhaust tube & the missing transom bracket will cost around £35.00 including the P&P, & it's got the plastic water return tube that I never liked.
If the vendor had this & an SD I think the SD would be on the top of my wish list, but it's still a very interesting Seagull 102, but once you've used it it's just another 102 with a CDI ignition.

I hadn't noticed that line on the exhaust, Charles. Well spotted.
I must say that a value is hard to define. You're quite right about the bracket, a newish looking one would cost around that, and of course you're quite correct that the best thing about this is its condition.
As a motor to use I don't think it's worth more than you suggest, I reckon you have it roughly right. Any motor that's been lying around for thirty years may well be suffering internally. We know there will be no fuel deposits in there, but we don't know about bearings and the like.
As a collectors' motor, well it's too recent to interest most and it's a bit of a bitsa where electronic ignition and fuel tank are concerned so it's not classic in any way, although that's he way it left the factory. It's got to be down to who wants it and how much he's prepared to pay.

I quite like it as bit of history.
The trouble with "never run" motors is can you ever use them.
I have one brand new never used engine and I will never run it.
You can always make your own 102 CDI, they run well, but I find they like it if you open the plug gap up quite wide.
This one did Lerryn for the third time this year.

On the Wipac mk 3 CDI (white CDI, smooth flywheel) the plug gap is 35 thou.
On the Wipac mk 4 CDI (brown/black CDI, grooved flywheel) the plug gap is 25 thou.
It might help if they're set as recommended by Seagull as the CDI's have a very short duration spark.

Very nice, but surely a 1982 engine would have had a steel tank ex the factory? Same as Hugz' engine which is shown on the SOS site?

These were built to get rid of as much old stock as possible, old fuel tanks, not the latest model steel version. Look at the old model prop not the more efficient hydrofan.
These were sold at the factory gate for bargain prices.
