I was recently given a handbook for a silver century plus . Inside the relevant section on fuel, was a footnote written by a previous owner concerning the effect of unleaded fuel (petrol). It states that additives must be used to increase the octane rating of unleaded fuel or the engine will run hot............. anyone care to add their comments to that statement ?
?It should be run on a low octane fuel
Lead additives were used to increase the octane ratings for high compression engines and to lubricate the valves in fourstroke engines not fitted with hardened valve seats.

If it runs hot then the cooling system is most likely choked up, or the pump impellor damaged. In either case there will be a poor flow of water from the outlet
