Block paint

I did a search, but didn't come across any references as to an appropriate paint for the cylinder block. The original paint is silver, but it appears brighter than the 'Hammerite smooth silver' type of colour, and perhaps needs to be heat resistant? (though I'm guessing it wont get too hot under normal circumstances.......)

Any good suggestions?

You can buy heat resistant aerosol spray paint, most automotive outlets sell it over here.There are different heat ranges and a multitude of colours, Ive even seen it in day glow and fluro colours just in case you want it to stand out that little bit more.

you can get brush paint then you dont have to mask

dont know mate i just use silver or black

Does the paint "have" to be heat resistant? Just restoring a century i have and have just used silver gloss

I've no idea on this one, waterways are all clear now after chipping away for an hour or so.

I have never used high temp paint.

It could be that Seagull did not bother either, when the cylinders get too hot through lack of water it burns off.

I am happy with smooth silver Hammerite and Satin "Tough Black"

Both are easy to use and don't wash off with petrol, they also are not effected by normal running temperatures.

My only concern if I had used gloss silver paint is that it may not be petrol proof. Bake it on a radiator for a few days it will help.

is it possible to spray varnish as a protective clearcoat?

I would not bother with varnish.

If you don't slosh petrol around it should be fine. If you find that it is no good, it is a quick job to pop the cylinder off and repaint.

The cylinder head can stay on when you do this.

You will have taken far more care than seagull did, they applied the silver paint very thinly.

Get it back together and running.
