Choke opening time

Post by Bilge Rat »

Hi
I have read in the FAQ's that the choke only needs to be on for a few seconds. My engine seems to need
about 10 minutes before it will give full revs without choke. Does this mean my mixture is incorrect?, if so,
what can I do about it.
Grateful for any help you can give.

Regards
George

My Featherweight is a few years older (1974) and has a Villiers carb. Yours has a Villiers carb ??

I have leaned out the mixture to stop it 4 stroking. It now needs a partly closed choke for just a little longer than "a few seconds", but not minutes.

I would say without doubt you are running too weak. Check the carb and jet for cleanliness, check the float level.
Ensure that the centre piece is correctly fitted
Don't use stale fuel.
Fuel will keep from one year to the next if stored properly. A part full fuel tank does not satisfy that requirement.
They dont like fuel that has gone stale

The basic setting for the needle is with the adjusting screw level with the piston top but mine is nearly 3 turns down!

Thats the one you access by taking the centre piece apart?

I have never dared do that!

Yes Vic,

a 10mm spanner is all you need to remove the lower secrion, then you can see it, off set slightly towards the intake side. Passageway goes up and turns 90 degrees, it comes out in the bottom of the air intake. Make sure the centrepiece locating scre is properly positioned in the square recess, not the round hole! The round hole is the fuel passage!

A blast of carb cleaner into the little 5mm hole in the intake should clear debris.. Or use WD40!

John
