Tilting the engine

Post by Otterpotter »

Hi everyone, I am new to the forum and have a very basic question.I have tried searching the forum but can't find the answer. Basically, I cannot tilt my engine even though I can see the bracket is designed to tilt with a chrome bracket which locates into a series of lugs to hold the engine in a tilted position for launching, etc. There is a photo which shows the problem area here http://s951.photobucket.com/albums/ad35 ... ?start=all. The rubber seems to be stopping the downtube from coming back through the opening in the lug. I can see that without the rubber, the downtube wouild fit through the gap. Should I remove the rubber or should it come back through as it is. I have tried considersable force, more than I could exert if the motor was mounted on the transom. Any suggestions welcome.

I have just purchsed an Otter dinghy which I have sailed a couple of times, she seems to go very well under sail. My engine is a 40+ with recoil start from about 1978, I hope this will prove to be a good combo, has anyone any experience of it?

Lower the rubber to a height where it will permit the drive shaft tube to be forced through the lug, in the case of an impact on the lower unit.
You have a transom bracket that is normally used on Seagulls with reverse.
Make it idiot proof and someone will make a better idiot.

Doesn't the thrust block pivot up to unlock and then the bracket should tilt?

Thanks for the replies guys. Hugz your'e right! Its 2.30a.m here but when I saw your photo of an identical bracket I took a torch into the garden and tried it. How stupid of me, I spent ages fiddling, I cant believe I didn't try that.

I have found the forum really useful so far, the beginners guide helped me to get the engine running (old fuel turned to 'gunk') and the tip about boiling the cork to cure fuel tap leaks was spot on and now this.

Thanks again and keep up the good work. I hope I will be able to post something useful myself one day.
