Auxiliary engine

Post by OldBawley »

Heard a story of some older guy who had mounted a Seagull ( tailless ) on a Simpson Laurence Seatiger manual anchor winch to lift up the chain and anchor.
Have not seen it myself.
Other funny uses ?

Re: Auxiliary anchor engine

I once spent a rough night swinging comfortably to what I thought was my trusty anchor but in fact turned out to be a Johnstone 4hp outboard motor - a use for that particular engine which even the manufacturers would probably not approve. I discovered the nature of my ground tackle when I attempted to raise it next morning - weighed about 50 lbs!
I presume it must have been running sweetly before it leapt off some poor unfortunate's transom to become my future mooring on the sea bed. Excellent holding power but I cannot in all honesty recommend it in place of a Delta as it dribbled yucky oil all over my foredeck once I had managed to get it over the rail. Of course if it had been a Seagull I would have turned it upside down, smacked it's bottom and it would have burst back into life at the first whiff of some fresh fuel. Pondering what to do with it as I already had several anchors on board I noticed a passing yacht with the same make of outboard on the rail. A quick "ahoy there" and soon after a contented skipper departed with his new "spare parts" motor/extra anchor secured on his rail.

No doubt we have all heard the one about the hard pressed mariner dragging anchor in a gale who tossed the Seagull over on a bit of line to keep him off the rocks - may actually be some truth in it........

Today I met Demis. Greek, 74 year old, long time sailor.
He saw my Fetherweight and started telling story's. Many, many years ago, they went spear fishing. Driving to a new hunting ground, borrowed some wooden boat, put the Seagull on and went fishing for the weekend.
On top of the flywheel some sandpaper was glued to sharpen the spear points, and they had some sort of pump they simply pressed on top of the flywheel nut to empty the ever leaking wooden boats.
He also told me that during the war ( ?????? Seagull before war ??? ) were used running on a mixture of lamp oil and alcohol ( Ouzo )
He now has a very big dingy and a very big outboard. Still, the Seagull was the best.

Have seen an old Seagull motor conected directly to a Water pump for filling an overhead tank. It was neat had a fitting to bypass someof the pump water to the motor, the outlet on the motor had a threaded fitting in it to bleed water also up to tank. This was on a remote beach shack. Was a litle noisy .
