repairing Ht lead

Post by OldBawley »

have a forty Fetherweight - Wipac mk2
After lots of mechanical repairs, it was running again. Left it unattended at the railing of the boat for months ( rowing is faster and cleaner ) Now no spark.
Want to start with new Ht spark plug lead. have new cable, how is the cable connected in the socket on the magneto side ?
Sailing in the Med, difficult to order spares from England.

This is the socket , above the new ( Old ) lead.
Bought this lead in Turkey in a bike repair shop, Looks good, copper not corroded. Old one to short and damaged.

Carefully remove the brass contact pin from its spring. Avoid deforming the spring itself. Then insert a small screwdriver down the centre of the spring, there's a brass screw at the end which penetrates the HT lead insulation and holds the lead in place as well as providing contact with the HT lead core.

Reassembly is the reverse.

Made new ht lead. Magic, there is the spark.
Then spend 2 h cleaning the gum out of the fuel system. Test tomorrow.

Next question : The tuktuk hangs on the guard rail on the transom of the boat. Low free board boat, no problem lifting it from rail onto the dingy.
Gearbox drips from time to time a drop of extremely stinky EP 140 oil into the sea. One drop makes a huge oil circle in the water, especially nasty when swimming .
Have tried plastic bag tied over gearbox, and the comes big mobo , big waves, even bigger oil circle.

Is there a simple way to avoid dripping oil ?

Just love it Oil sliks are a part of Seagulls, a decent oil slik in big seas helps subdue the waves!!!!

Having a good blue spark and after kleening the carb, No start. No gas . Bowl dripping but no gas. So it must be the hole in the brass centerpiece. I open the carb again and he is full of green slime. ?????
Emptey the tank in a glas bottle and clean again, this time also the tank. ( Good tips in your forum )

Now the question, the gas is 2,5 months old, and when i schake the botte the gas and 2stroke oil mingle.
( Green stuf, the Turkisch explanation on the bottle is Turkisch to me but it is markt NMMA TC_W3 )
After 1 minit the green slime sits on the bottom and is sepperated from the gas.
No wonder everything clogs up. This stuff dus not mingle.
Is this normal ?

Ps, will not use the gas, and yes the bottle contained 2liters of ouzo.

Dont know what the crap is in the bottom, it certainly not 2stroke oil. Better chuck it out, 2stroke oil should remain mixed. Also if the fuel tank is brass dont leave fuel in there to long as it reacts with the brass & goes off.

This is the green stuff, sepperates from gas after less than a minute.
Then looks like a alien life form, wandering true the engine, glueing needles and floats.
How long must two stroke oil stay into the gas after stirring ?
Dus a Seagull run on Ouzo ?

Bought this morning fresh Tc oil. Not the by the saleswomen recommended oil for outboard engines,( Lots of dust on the plastic bottle ) But simple mineral tc oil. One could see that this oil was sold a lot. Mixed 1/2 litre .
At five o´clock in the afternoon some medical emergency. A specific medicine was not available at Galatas. I decided to have a try at Poros, only one mile away, but a different word.
Mounted Seagull on dingy, filled a pint of fresh mixed gas, One pull and there we went of. For 1/2 minute the bowl leaks, giving full throttle stops it, then the goo in the needlesetting was dissolved, no more leaking, everything perfect.

The pharmacy in Poros had the stuff we needed. Relief.
Sailed the way back What an engine.

Excellent news.

I like Poros. Is the antique Naval vessel still there? A cruiser I think.

Poros remains a vague memory for me.A flight to Athens in a DanAir Comet - that gives my age away - then a fortnight of alcohol and sex. There must have been something else involved, but I can't remember it...

Not seen a historic ship, ( Except for mine )
Have anchored just in front of the "Naval base " Only activity in one week : every morning and evening at 8 o´clock they play a tape with some trumpet music.

Have seen some alcohol and that was it. Flower power age i suppose?
