102 woes

Post by Rob Ripley »

I attempting to bring AC868 back to normal (the power unit was fitted to a 40+ gearbox with a tapered exhaust tube). I have a 102 gearbox with the drive tube just too short and a spare drive tube that is too long. How do I remove the short drive tube from the square stub on the gearbox?
And whats the reason for the oiling nipple above the pump rotor? Should there be a lubricating washer above? or a bronze bearing with oil hole attachement?

There should be a bearing in the bottom of the drive tube 1370, I made my last one out of Nylon as it does not do much.

If the drive shaft is rusted to the gearbox input shaft then give it some heat and get your hammers out.

One of my driveshafts was so corroded on I resorted to carefully grinding a slot along the length of the square bit of pinion until a small chisel could be inserted. Take your time and the pinion will be ok to reuse.

Made a new water pipe out of 10mm OD copper pipe (even bought a pipe bender), Fitted it and put the motor on the test tank to see if the water was pumping ...

It was .... everywhere !!!
Stripped it and found that the pump vane had about 3mm play, actually grinding some from the base, so I guess some water escaped and was pumped up the drive shaft.
What to do ... ?

Did you have the front cap off the gearbox?
If yes did you reinstall the thrust washer? part no 1377 in the G.A.
Make it idiot proof and someone will make a better idiot.

Looks like the pinion has dropped.

I like the 2 horizontal tell-tales :)

As charles has said is the thrust washer missing, or are the gears shot ?
