Brendan this thread is getting very diluted & a long way off topic could you give us another thread entitled "Possible stuff for inclusion in The beginner's guide to British Seagull ownership" or something like that.

Before Haynes kidnap Keith & carry him off to create their animated workshop manuels & perhaps another area that when the guide is finished could be used to store PDFs or whatever so that they could be downloaded & printed for the beginer's workshop use.

I haven't missed the point at all, I'm merely pointing out that there's lot of history on the main site. Which there is.

Not that it is really anyone else's business, but a couple of years ago CharlesP had a stroke, not long afterwards I visited him to see how he was doing & to drink some of his tea, he brought up the subject of his Seagull ephemera & what he would like to happen to it in the event of shit happening.
Much of his early Seagull paperwork was bought from the bay at which point a value was established & I was asked if I would assist his lady wife to sell it ensuring that she received sensible prices. Most of his research notes were to go to a fellow outboard collector, who is in the process of compiling a book on the entire UK outboard industry, his collection of interesting Seagulls were to be sold to people who would appreciate & cherish them, The one I really coveted the only SN known to still survive I could have if I still wanted it.

All this proved to be a mute point as he's back in rude health.

Maybe an Association is not good for us but would be good for some of the younger ones who are showing an interest in our silly old motors. The history should be made available either by book or web site. When we are all to old to remember, the history will die and the seagull will soon be extinct and it will be our silly faults. How long do you think these younger people will stay interested in seagull things if we don't share?
Charles get on with the book if you are going to do it or let some one else write it, surely having a little money returned from book sales would be a good thing.
"A return on your investment" is the term I think.

The book is sitting on my dining table, printed on A5 sheets in a ring binder. A couple of people on here have seen drafts. The acknowledgements and what I call 'margin notes' - the bits you can refer to at the back to tell where information has come from - are still not referenced by page, but I'm happy with virtually all the rest, with a very few exceptions:

* Better photos of a couple of motors.
* A few more bits of advertising ephemera I would like to depict.
* Tidying up some scanned images.

But - and it's proving to be big 'but' - I still have virtually nothing about what happened during the WWII. That's such an important part of the story I can't miss it out, but despite looking very hard I have not one single official reference to the use of British Seagulls during that whole period, nor a photograph. I have spent ages at the National Archive, museums, and the like, but to no avail.

Naturally new things crop up that I had never heard of, and occasionally something comes long that is deserving of inclusion. Just this week a previously unseen Marston artefact was unearthed, I'll be popping off to photograph that next week. A few months ago a manual came to my notice, space was made for part of that.

One day it'll be complete, or at least complete to my satisfaction. Then I may publish it. I'm toying with the idea of E-publishing - that way I can offer updates, and it can be dirt cheap too.

But that's one day. For now it's work in progress.
