Seagull 102 Longshaft with clutch THCL314H4 Bought on e-Bay
I have recently purchased an old 1964 102 longshaft in fair condition from e-Bay. Sold as a Silver Century. I got it at a very reasonable price and was amazed how big they are. (That's what she said last night...ooh ur misses) It was purchased on trust from the previous owner who guaranteed it was fully working. On inspection it appeared to have not been started for quite some time.... there was no spark at all. After taking the flywheel cover off I could finally see the points and gave them a good clean. After getting a weak spark I noticed there was no spark at the plug end, so I took the HT lead off and saw the real problem, a loose connection. I cleaned the end of the lead and put it all back together, added some 10/1 fresh fuel and gave it a pull. After 3 pulls the old girl was running again, well sort of.... Backfires through the carb..... After cleaning the carb out, which I must say was a really easy job to do. Has the Amal twin jet carb. It fired up first pull... Great on low throttle... tick over like a dream and then pop it stops, Backfiring every 3/4 seconds when on med to high throttle The problem? Timing out? Yes, the flywheel base plate had been put on wrongly by the previous owner and from my observations that is why he sold it... Looked on this great site and HEY PRESTO... Set it to four o clock (I am not mad I did read it on SOS.... believe me!) And bang!!! the old girl is running as good as new again, Starts first pull everytime in a tank of water and goes in and out of gear smoothly and even better no parts needed, just a little reading on SOS and a little TLC... What a result!!!! I am no engineer.... However, with a little reading and some great tips on this site I am confident that even in a force 8 gail I could get that old girl going again if a problem should arise... After having a year of grief with my Yamaha 5hp I have gone completely back to basics again and have two Seagull's a shortshaft minus 40 on my tender and the longshaft 102 on my yacht as a backup. Seagull outboards in my opinion have to be the best no nosense engines pennies can buy..... And I do mean PENNIES... I have now given it a full service and I am planning to test it fully tomorrow on my yacht... Wish me luck!!! Keep up the good work SOS and let's all keep our Seagull's up and running for another eternity.....

Great result.
It is good to get them running as they should.
Perhaps you could post a picture.
They are fantastic value engines, and if you take them apart and re-assemble them correctly then you should be able to rely on them fully.
At least that is what I kept telling myself last Sunday when I was climbing up the 6 foot waves at full throttle with a 50 year old engine
But they can still throw a tantrum.

Hi, Had a great day on the Tidal Thames at Gravesend Kent today. Tested fully the old 102. Pushed my Snapdragon 21 yacht along against the tide with a very strong under current. Had to regap the A6 spark plug, used a Rizla packet corner folded once and it sprung in to life and it performed like a dream. Used around a litre of fuel an hour, not bad considering it had to be on full throttle most of the time due to the conditions of the current. Very pleased. I tried to post some photos but it seems the max limit is only 2mb. I will resize them and when I do will stick a few on here. Thanks HA for the reply... Seems to me you are a real seagull nut.... In the nicest sense of course... 6ft waves sound good to me!!!

Have you got a 3.5 meter boat without a huge stick poking out the top & a friend?
Come for a once around Hayling island, probably sometime May / June, & meet a bunch of like minded nutters!
Watch the racing page for details.

Hi Charles, Thanks for the message. I read about the Seagullathon last night flicking through the forum. Unfortunately I do not have a boat for that purpose, only my old Snappy 21 yacht and tender which does the job for that purpose quite well, would not want to go that distance in an 8ft Sniper although I am told it is unsinkable... May have a friend kicking around somewhere... who knows.
Sounds like a nice day out, don't mind meeting a bunch of likewise nutters.
.
If someone has a boat and no engine then maybe we could team up for the day.
Speak soon, Clive.

Hi Mate, Nice to hear from someone in OZ although not surprised as Seagull outboards have certainly lived up to their slogan of being the best outboard...
Rizla are fine as they take on a lot of oil and grease when working on the boat, so the effect is completely water proof
The problem sometimes if you have gotten too much 10.1 mix on them and you find out how much you loved your eyebrows
and how long you are going to miss them....
Tally Ho..... To Our friend in Oz Good luck Mate!!!

Re: Seagull 102 Longshaft with clutch THCL314H4 Bought on e-
Hi Seagull nuts,
Had great fun...not!!! these past few weeks getting the old girl going again....
My old 102 had caught some kind of bug... We even had to be towed back by our great friends the RNLI.
It started with the popping through the carb and the old girl then seemed to be running rather rich then rather dry... I tried everything to keep her running (well I thought I did).. to no avail.
So I decided to take her off the yacht and take her home and strip her down and clean the carb the fuel tank etc...
Full service later... It appeared the flywheel had moved, so I retimed her again and again and again
... She would run fine but as soon as she was put into gear she run like sh1t or conked out or both. Changed the plug run fine for a while but as soon as she went in to gear she stopped, next day she was hard to start and after cleaning the plug run fine in the tank for a while then hard to start again... Anyway I was finally at my whits end and arranging her funeral until it dawned on me.... Points fouled!!!!
Yes... I must confess I am no engineer, however I am a tryer and I like to read and like to fathom things out.... Thank Fu$k for that.... It was the points fouled and the timing. She is running sweet as a nut again... better than before and I did it!!!
Hopefully right this time!!!
I have tightened the timing screw real tight and put some special glue on the thread prior to tightening to stop it from vibrating loose again... Hope that works. I will keep you all posted. Any advice you guy's??? Have you had the same problem with the flywheel base plate coming loose and messing up the timing?
She now goes in and out of gear at very low revs and starts with real ease with just a single wrap around at low revs first time everytime... Fingers crossed she stays that way!!!
It all stemmed from someone I know whom put extra oil in the petrol can, probably, 1/1 mix as it was like syrup when I emptied the tank... that's what friends are for.... No more sailing for him... LOL Managed to clear the blue smoke that trailed for almost a mile behind us... Could aim to do some shows and call myself the Blue devils, unfortunately I cannot do a loop de loop at the moment.
Although I could have used it as a signal device for the life boat... Thanks to these wonderful people who risk their lives to help us. The Gravesend lifeboat team are really truly a wonderful bunch.
I am soooo thankful
I am out sailing later today... I started feeling a little left out seeing all my friends out sailing the past couple of weekends as I have been tinkering with the 102's timing and servicing the old beast.... anyways, at least I have learnt something new. I will keep you all posted how she goes tomorrow
. If you have any advice please write.... Great site for people like myself new to engineering lot's of very useful info, tips and advice Thanks guy's.
