Technical Question

I have an old small twin outboard Elto thing, the coil has burnt out, its a single coil but it runs two HT leads.
Could I use a villiers coil that will just fit and run two plugs leads from it. :?:

Are both plugs firing at the same time? horizontally opposed cylinders?

If answer is yes try connecting 2 plugs to one villiers coil plug lead, & spin with drill, that's answered your question, the spark will follow the easiest course & only one will spark properly, now open the gap on the working plug, now only the other will work well!

Yes Charles, one coil, one set of points, two HT leads.
Its an evinurde elto ace basically.

I will give it a try.

As a side issue, if its a twin I don't fink its an Ace. I have a Hunn book to hand at the moment, so if you are interested, give the serail number and I should be able to name and date it.

From the engine config you describe it would need a coil with dual secondary windings.

The seagull only has a single secondary winding, so I can't see that as suitable solution.

I imagine exactly the problem CharlesUK describes arising.

Might be a case of getting it rewound.

Do you have a model number for the motor? I've got some double secondary coils that may be good and may fit. Could you measure its length and dia?

Picture less coil.

I think its a 1938-1941 Sea King 8.5 HP Model 881, if that helps.

Sadly mine show open. The coil you need is omc p/n# 190108

I think there are some AOMCI members who frequent this forum, if so, they may be willing to scan and email you the article from the AOMCI quarterly magazine "Antique Outboarder" issue Oct. 2010, p 33. [If no one responds I will have a go at scanning and emailing it for you, PM me.]

It covers using the universal omc coil, to refit a dual secondary coil on your original laminations. That is the omc coil used in all the omc magnetos 1952-'58, and on many into the 70s. [BRP/OMC p/n# 0584477 or Sierra 18-5181]

I can order them off U.S. ebay for about $22 CDN ea. delivered, so 9-10 GBP. They are also available for about $35 -40 CDN incl. tax here, from the BRP/OMC dealers

You remove the laminations they come with [press off], and put 2 coils [in your case] on the laminations your coil came on. The laminations they come on are 7/16" square, cut or grind down your laminations to fit if need be.

Thank you for the information, I have has the coils before for other motors.
I did find the old coil, or what's left of it, so making a conversion is an option.
