What year is this Seagull?

Post by Jer »

I've entered the serial code from the engine into the handy applet on this site but that lead to a little confusion
The engine code is SPCL1517FF6

What I don't understand is, the SPC range of engines appear to have been manufactured between 1966 and 1969, yet my SPC engine according to this has a date of manufacture of 1976 :?

Can anyone shed any light on what year this engine actually was manufactured?

Number indicates June 1976. Check to see if it has a wipac magneto. There may be a W in front of your number that is a bit faint. That limp wristed number puncher again... :| Or you have one of those abnormalities that turn up from time to time. What colour is the flywheel. Picture??

aha!! I'm in awe of your knowledge, I took a photograph of the serial number which no 'W' is visible at all on, I just went back and had another look at the engine and there is indeed a very very faint 'W' the full serial is infact WSPCL1517FF6 which clears up my confusion,

The engine has unfortunately been 'improved' with blue paint  so it's not the easiest thing in the world currently to tell what is meant to be what colour, I'm intending on cleaning the engine down a bit to restore some of it's original looks where possible, but that's something to do over the spring.

Thanks again

Anyone that inappropriately paints a motor should be hung, drawn and quartered and fed to the dingoes. Or tar and feathered and then painted, cultural vandals, that they are.

Paint stripper and wire brush. It does come off eventually.

I have found that under the paint engine condition can be good.

Also if someone is prepared to spend time painting, then perhaps they might have been inclined to flush after use.
So the engine might have been maintained a just little, which is more than most.

Or they try and get a better price on ebay! <shudder> :D

If it was well maintained it wouldn't need painting! But do appreciate your viewpoint.
