i was talking to a old boy who used to wind shear springs from welding rod does anyone have views on this ty dave

Well I'm sure it would get you going again and act as a coiled shear pin but I'm not convinced that the required springiness would be there. As the real ones are so easy to get hold of why would he want to roll his own?

well hes a chap who, as we say in yorkshire likes nattling hes 82,he still as a seagull he bought new in 1970 maybe he also visits this site.
