Gearbox Removal

Hi ALL,
Can anyone give me advise on removing the gearbox on a 40+
please?
(Where to start first)
Have looked in FAQs and cant seem to find anything!

Not a difficult one this, just ease out the two bolts on the top of the waterpump housung. Whitworth spanners dont forget, then split at the gasket.The drawing should help let us know why you need to do this and if you need further assistance.

Thanks for the pic cant see the wording I'm afraid, never mind thank you anyway.
The 2 bolts I have are of the rounded off allen key type, probably have to drill them out :cry:
Just wanted to swop a seized one on a long shaft for another that works fine on a medium shaft.

If you remove the drive shaft casing and the exhaust from the powerhead then remove them at the bottom end, you may well get good enough access to coax the screws out. The driveshaft casing can be removed from the foot by removing the pinch bolt and re-inserting it (well greased) from the other side with a flat piece of fairly thick steel in the gap in the clamp, then tightening it to prize the clamp open a little till you can twist the casing tube free. DONT OVERDO IT, its only an aluminium casting and any attempt to get it too far open is likely to result in a broken casting.

The driveshaft may well be stuck on the pinion shaft end and is likely to require heat, penetrating oil and a slide hammer to free it once you have the gearbox off the flange at the bottom of the leg. Don't try to remove it until you have the flange joint apart.

You could try cuting across the head of the bolt to make a slot. With a lot of heat and a good screwdriver ? its worth a try. Ians ideas a good one sill i would use a blow torch to warm up the outer casing. Got to say love that pikie/Avatar Pizey.

Thanks for your help guys, cant make a groove in them because they are deep in the recess, unable to get at them!
So by removing the pinch bolt your telling me it is then possible to remove the gearbox all in one hit?
Its that simple :oops:
