Bermuda round the island Seagull race 2010

Post by Charles uk »

Dear All

WHAT A GREAT DAY ….. I hope you thanked the Seagull gods for the lovely weather -

First of all - I would like to thank all that participated, helped, donated prizes, crashboated, hosted the race etc - but a BIG THANK YOU goes to Heineken/Burrows Lightbourn for supporting the race - and also to RUBIS SHELL for supporting the crash boats……

As a result of their help - I would like to announce that I have worked out that we can donate $5,250 to the Diabetes Association this year - that is even better than last year!!!! This is a big thank you to Maxine Adderley - who would not give up on the Heineken raffle until she had reached $1,000 in tickets… thank you Maxine…
This donation will be made in memory of Chummy Anfossi…….

I attach two files - one is the Race results - and the other the prize listing - hopefully my maths was OK -
I have a lot of the crash boat fuel vouchers still - so please let me know
Scott Benton and Andrew Osborne - please contact me about the stickers you wanted...

And there were some usual seagull stories - and one big whopper fish story too….

We thought the most exciting finish was going to be the Sports G1 class - between Allotafagina and Dixie - it was very close - but the ladies managed to pull ahead and stay there- so a half a minute lead - BUT - the best was yet to come… for the E1B class - not wood dinghy - old engine - it was a neck a neck drive for the finish line between Musty Crussell and Thirsty - the crews were lying low and trying to bounce their way forward - the crowd were yelling (too late for the bookies) but the crew of Bert and Michael managed to get their prow over the finish line seconds before Chris and Art could….. Photo finish - and well deserved for a prize….

JJ Soares built a new boat - the interesting side to this was that he built it INSIDE his house - and the boat was bigger than his windows and doors - so there was apparently an interesting "set" trying to get it outside - the weekend before the race!! It is a black boat - and when it went out we thought that JJ had left his crew behind - NO - he had built something that his crew was shut up inside the hull… so Bob Vaughan definitely got a prize for being so good as to stay 2 hours plus in a black hulled boat in the sun - and being shut up and not able to get out.. I wonder if JJ gave him anything to drink… probably not - as how could he relieve himself - lying down in this coffin like thing…..

The fish story was that Mully of the Peter L Moran caught a rockfish - the fishy side of this was that he crossed the line without it - disappeared round the corner - came back again with it!!! Apparently a fisherman was very kind to bring it in for him…...

Then we go onto the crash boat stories -
I got a phone call from Kim and Chester wondering who the 3 people were that were in a yellow boat as they weren't driving very straight - and had ended up crashing into them!! The boats apparently were OK and they kept going - both of them that is - but - needless to say Mark Whayman and his crew of two lovely ladies were not in the best states when they returned..
The 2nd story was more of one of perils of seagulling - Cindi Pearman and her able crew of Graham and Kevin were up north shore - apparently Turkey Spray decided to wave enthusiastically to them - so much so - that they fell overboard - and the boat was continuing on- and around and around in circles - so Cindi et al - managed to grab the boat to the side of theirs - but now they were going round and round too - still swimmers in the water - So Graham held the boat while Kevin clambered down to get to the throttle and go to idle!!! Thank you both -
Lastly - a word for the wise - it was unfortunate that the boat Family Tree who registered on the day - broke down just after it started - or maybe it drifted over it - I could not tell - anyhow the marine police ended up being the ones to help them - and it turned out that the boat was not registered - remember all - boats have to be registered - you never know what happens in your day - and who happens to rescue you first!!

Thanks again to everyone - and the Seagull Race Committee who take their time to check times etc - get the prizes organised - and generally help to make it a great day - see you next year - roughly around this time - we need to decide whether to keep it around Fathers Day - or a week earlier ….
Watch this space!!!

Picture 9 , 2003 is my 170 doing what it was built for, once again.

This time with a pipe, but it goes faster without one now.

It equalled the record in 2008, that was held by a piped 5R on the same boat.

Still no one has broken my sport record even on a perfect day.

Is the Slimey Limey keeping the Bermudian Pirates honest?

charles, speaking of keeping people honest.... my motor and dean's boat would like to talk to you about 'your' sport record!!!! (and don't make me come on here and let people know how many 'pirated' parts your 170 needed to finish the race, never mind run as well as it did...? ooops!!!!!!!)

on a serious note, you were missed this year - hope you get that 'partner' status worked out in time for next june... and look out monday or tuesday for that scan i owe you...

What are you trying to say Jason?

Is it that every time that hull & that motor come out to play, the combination seems unbeatable, even with a limey at the helm?

I hear you didn't do too bad this year, even if it did take your Farthers supervision, acting as a "sleeping partner".

good talking with you - catch you early next week!

Picture 37 out of 40 is my 170, I don't remember going that year, only time I ever used a pipe.
