The origin of the name 40+
They are called Forty Plus for the simple reason that they start despite being 40+ years old.

I put the 40+ my father bought in '62 on my little toy (an old Soling). Works like a charm. But i Tied a rag around the lower unit to prevent the dripping of oil into our bathwater.

Is It that you have not put your pin in?
Or that you have not attached your blue safety line?
H-A
P.S. Where you wearing that shirt when it got wrapped round the prop?

"40 Plus" may well stand for....."40 Plus Pulls" if a dickey "spark gap" coil.

Both my 40+'s have very worn holes for the retaining bar. Has anyone drilled it out for a larger pin? What about fitting rubber/nylon sleeve on the clamping frames to help cut down vibration ?
Re: The origin of the name 40+
tighten up the steering so it doesn't move freely and that gets rid of a lot of vibration
H-A spotted it as always
I was thinking of the missing locking pin - I just hung the motor on the bracket to take the picture. Well spotted
Well, I was wearing a lot more than the shirt and a lifejacket, the temperature in the air and the water were both about 8 C. Brrr! So if the motor had gotten the shirt off my back without my noticing, now that would have been an accomplishment!

I do that with all my Seagulls, doesn't stop the vibration from a worn hinge pin.

Re: The origin of the name 40+
On my 40+, I put a leather strap in each mount fulcrum, whatever the mount bracket's two journals are called that support the motor's mount, with the right-angled pin through the both of them. That takes up most all of the free play.
This trick isn't friendly with the idea of taking the motor off the bracket though I just remove the motor and bracket together, being as this motor's stored using that bracket as well.
If needed, I'll get a picture up here. Now about the name - is it anything to do with having 40 and then some in terms of pounds thrust? Just a WAG.

There is nothing so useless as doing efficiently that which should not be done at all.
