repaint the flywheel...

I'm just starting the disassembly of my latest acquisition to the flock - a forty plus.

Looking ahead a little I will need to repaint the flywheel. I noticed that it has (my description) sort of a crinkle looking appearance. I learned to spray paint, but only the very basics - does anyone know how the affect on the paint was achieved by Seagull?

Also did this engine ever come equipped with a long range tank in brass?

The 'crinkle' effect was achieved by spraying them with Hammerite - still available today in spray cans from hardware stores and, I believe, Halfords.

Yes they were available with long range tanks - if you get a tank from, say, John, then it should be a straight swap provided you get the one that doesn't need straps.

Is Hammerite a trade name or a type of spray paint? I ask since I do not live in the UK.

Colin - standard paint available in North America at Marine shops Ive noticed

I get mine from Jamestown Distributors in Rhode Island..Im sure you have something local who carries it.

Check out Rustoleum.ca They have hammered paint that matchs Seagull's original paint as close as possible and it's avaiable in spray cans too. They are in available in most hardware stores - Lowe's , Home Depot etc here in the states. I haven't been in Ca. in a few years so I don't know if those stores are there yet. Good luck on your rebuild!

Thanks for that information Duane. I looked at the site; the shown samples look exactly like a Seagull finish.

I'll be going to Home Depot this morning. I'll ask them about it and post the results here.
