Re: 1929 ELTO outboard
As I said it was an Evinrude not an ELTO, the best I could do would be to email you the photos as I have never been successful in posting photos to the forum from my I-Pad, if you could email me your email address.

Re: 1929 ELTO outboard
That's interesting I've got a 1929 Evinrude Sportwin folder, neat motor! Sadly I have to sell all my motors because of illness.

Re: Silver Century project, shipload of questions
In my opinion, the motors run cold and most of the ones I see are running way too rich, unless it's going to be doing long runs of over an hour at 3/4 - full throttle, it needs a D21 Champ., also I much prefer NGK ab6 or ab7 to a champion. All my old motors start much easier with NGK. By the way, I ...

Re: thoughts? Ideas? Jokes?
Depth about 2" above cavitation plate, I'm assuming the white plastic gate on the thrust block broke? If so there is a bronze one that was used on earlier motors, try to get one of those.
I'm sure John W. can supply that, maybe used?
Trolling speed one way to get flow at low RPM is to drill ...

Re: Hone a cylinder bore before re-ring er no?
The best Century or Silver Century I've seen has about 72 psi, I'm happy if I find one that is 60 cold and dry. They seem to run well at 50 psi and I've seen them run with 35 psi. I don't put any oil in before checking comp. it does not give you a proper base for comparison between motors, in my ...
Re: No spark
The cover is easy to get off, just undo the top nut and lift the rope pulley off, then the cover, if the cover is a bit stuck because of some junk stuck in the flywheel groove, try bouncing it with light tapping a 1/2" back from the circumference all
the way around. Or very carefully pry up edge ...

Re: No spark
Yellow not good enough look for a blue spark that will jump at least 10mm. Necessary because the cylinder is under compression when spark occurs, making sparking more difficult in the cylinder. Clean the points better and check your plug lead for resistance zero or very close will likely do.

Re: Pinion bush LS motor
Thanks, I was not certain that the LS shared the same bush as SJP etc. it was a badly maintained gearbox, the shaft has perhaps 4-5 mm clearance either side as it passes through the bush. Surprisingly, the inside of the motor was in beautiful shape, appears never to have been run in the salt, looked ...

Ok, thanks, a little more clearance in a 4:1 gearbox.

Re: Pinion bush LS motor
So you drove it down instead of trying to drive it up? I suppose it's the same as a later 40, but was it an LS you were working on? I'm assuming you drove it down because there does not appear to be clearance to use a hammer inside the gearcase. Although you said towards the water pump side which I ...

Re: Brought "IT" home, 2 questions.........
If you are on the east coast of north America, I can help you out with the parts you need to convert to the clutched gearbox. The one I have spare is off a Silver Century around the same vintage as yours. Forward and neutral only, as these were built, I have many motors with FNR gearboxes but I ...

Pinion bush LS motor
Is there enough clearance to remove the shaft the pinion gear is on with the prop.shaft out and end cap off?
I'm trying to remove the pinion bush, my plan was to use a penetrating oil, a puller and tapping on the outside of the case.
I will check with John to see if he has a useable pinion bush, but ...

Re: 10:1, 8:1, or wot ?
Seems to me that the imperial measurement gives 10:1, 16oz. (1pint) to 160oz. .(1gallon) = 10:1
Also 10:1 is not too smoky unless you running it too rich or with too cold a plug, which is the case with almost every Seagull I've bought, all carboned up, unless it's being run many hours a day at ...
