Run for the first time

Well I sea trialled the 4.5hp Century on my 7ft Glass dinghy yest with my hand held GPS.

As suspected it pulled a top speed of only 5.8mph. Half throttle was only 5mph so more revs did not equate to more speed. Heaps quieter though and ran beautifully.

As most do im sure it smokes a bit when ...

Propellor Pin Question

I think i read somewhere here about replacing the prop split pin with an R Clip. (See pic attached of mine) for ease of removal when in test tank etc after use.

Is this safe to do when running on a dinghy? Centrifugal force shouldnt spit it out shouldnt it ?

Anyone had problems with this or should ...

Re: After use care ......

Great, That sounds like good advice. Ill do all of that.

But i was mainly thinking of the water jackets in the block. Is there something that i can stick in the water when running it clean that may leave a coating on the inside that will prevent corrosion ? Maybe im seeing a potential problem that ...

After use care ......

Right team.

After use in salt water. (or any water for that matter)

What should i put in the fresh water to run through the motor to preserve the interior while its being stored ?

Any good ideas to prevent corrosion in its downtime ?

Regards...Jesse

Re: Water Flow and Temperature

Oh ok, i didnt know that. I was just going to reuse it with a rtv gasket sealer.

So i get it red hot and then drop it in water. Will i still need to use a sealer when putting it back on ?

Re: Water Flow and Temperature

I couldnt sleep, It was nagging me so i stripped it down, Just blocked up in the jackets by the head face, behind that the jackets were open so i suspect its had a pretty good life. Needless to say, its going to get a birthday to satisfy myself that there is no future cooling issues.

Re: Water Flow and Temperature

Hi all, so my 71' Century Seagull appears to have good water flow, after reading this im questioning it now.

The temperature seems to be luke warm at the most, its only running just above idle to get the water flowing and its in a test tank so not revving hard.

After 5 or ten minutes of running ...

Re: Pics of my Silver Century Seagull

That seems pretty straight forward (i say now)...Thanks for that. I would just like to clean the exhaust because after i ran it and it warmed up, when i stopped the old girl it was haemoraging this black crap from the bottom of the large exhaust tube so id say its caked in goop on the inside. Every ...

Re: Pics of my Silver Century Seagull

Does anyone know how to get that big fat eaxhaust tube off ? Ive had every nut and screw/bolt out, cleaned and back in place one at a time so far so thats all good, nothing is seized or snapped off.

I havnt separated any gaskets other than the bottom ...

Re: Pics of my Silver Century Seagull

Ha ha, yeah i reckon. Now that i know it runs well, i think ill strip the exhaust down and clean it as I imagine it will be a bit grubby onder the exhaust tube.

Pics of my Silver Century Seagull

Well here it is. This Seagull was found abandoned in a shed under a pile of junk. I cleaned everything, replaced all fluids and fired her up. Goes better than expected. It will "tick over" at surprisingly slow revs which i was amazed at. Is in pretty good nick for 40 years old but i think im ...

Re: identification help required.

Strpped , cleaned, replaced all fluids and fired the old girl up. What do you know, she cranks. Goes hard. Was carefull not to rev too high with no prop on but am keen as mustard to throw it on my 7ft glass dingy now. I reckon it will boogie.

Ill keep you posted. Cheers all
