Try taking the plug out, put a screwdriver in. Check for TDC then adjust the points.

Thanks for your help guys, cant make a groove in them because they are deep in the recess, unable to get at them!
So by removing the pinch bolt your telling me it is then possible to remove the gearbox all in one hit?

Thanks for the pic cant see the wording I'm afraid, never mind thank you anyway.
The 2 bolts I have are of the rounded off allen key type, probably have to drill them out
Just wanted to swop a seized one on a long shaft for another that works fine on a medium shaft.

Atoyot .... Dome nut removal and lifting pulley plate to check points etc. is akin to lifting the bonnet (hood) on your car and taking off the distributor cap. When cars had those things. It is a part of normal servicing and isn't rocket science . (hope I didn,t miss a full stop) [/color]

Just picked up another 40+ and the thread is knackered where the banjo union bolt screws into the body, can this be sorted or is it doomed!
