Some problems after replacing head gaskets

Hi guys!!! First thing. have a nice holiday!Second thing: i've recently replaced head and base of cylinder gaskets, but when in sea the engine starts hardly, like it was flooded, working hard... during replacing, i've had to remove the cylinder with the pipe of water-cooling and some oil dropped from the base... i'ts possible that i've used the gear oil up?

Well I think you should definitely check the gearbox oil anyway, putting some more oil in is definitely cheaper than replacing the gears!

Why did you replace the gaskets? was the motor running OK before? perhaps you could tell us the model and year of the motor, whether it has been converted to run on 25:1 mix ( if appropriate ) and what fuel mix you are using. For example if the the motor is still set up for 10:1 mix and you use 25:1 then you will probably be running too rich as you suspect.

Replacing gaskets was necessary because, even if the engine was working properly, there was some dripping of fuel through the head.
The oil was replaced one month ago... the problem starts from removing the water tube from the gear for making the replacement possible..
In a first time the tube don't seem simply slip in the gearbox , so i've only reintroduced it...

Not sure the two things are related.

I think you are suspecting gearbox oil is getting into the water pipe? This wouldn't be unheard of in an old engine if the oil leaks past a worn bearing under the pump 'impellor', at least you know the bearing is being lubricated! Not sure that this would cause bad running.

The only time the gearbox could affect running / starting would be if it had seized ( or partially so ) this should be fairly easy to detect, if you separate the gearbox again it should turn freely, if not then you have a problem.

If thye gearbox is OK the bad running sound more like a mixture / timing problem to me

the problem was that, opening the head, i was forced to remove the transmission of the pump, where now is dripping oil.
Certainly i've to open the drive box, but i've not the right hexagonal wrench.Do you now what size of wrench i've to use? Beause probably is difficult to find in my country :roll:

what is the oil leak? If it is black oil like sludge coming from the base of the large tube (exhaust) then it is nothing to be worried about. It is unburnt fuel oil and normal. Check the gearbox oil, the plastic bung is a filler and level plug. You will need Whitworth Spanners to strip your motor correctly. What motor is it? What is the number stamped into the casting just above the small tube.(drive tube) Does it run well now?

oh i'm sorry, the motor is one of the last forty.. id number is TSEFPCL4 90A2. Yes the oil is black, coming from the base of the exaust tube, but the leak is considerable. Now i'm going to check the level of the oil of the gearbox.. i hope that the problems doesn't depend by replacing gaskets

As Phil says, a leak of black sludge for the exhaust pipe is nothing to worry about. My 40+ ( admittedly a bit older than yours! ) leaks from both the top AND the bottom of the exhaust after running for only a minute or two, as Phil says, it is only unburnt oil mixed with carbon etc from the cylinder, it leaks as the joints are not oil tight. I just rub it off with an old rag when I stop, it stops corrosion!

As for the gearbox, not sure you need to take that apart at all, you can check the oil through the filler / level plug on the front ( the white plastic one ) and as long as it has oil and turns OK when the gearbox is seperate from the motor I would leave well alone, they give little trouble unless the motor has hit something which has bent a shaft or something.

You engine being a late one should be running on a 25:1 petrol / oil mix, what are you using?
