Is a piston, con rod and a con rod end cap from a 1977 Silver Century a direct swap into a 1955-56 AC model 102?

Yes. Referring to the parts lists ( "Lit 02" for the 102 and a 1980 impression of "Owners spares book") shows the part numbers for these items are identical across the 102cc models. (I always like to plug that it is worthwhile getting hold of the spare parts booklets.)

have read the above, but have just now assembled a century, and when comparing the inside of the cylinder heads, whilst the outsides are identical, the insides appear different. the century head had a little step that matched with the stepped piston. the silver century head on the other hand did not have a step, instead, was machined circular.

The reason I wanted to use this other head was becuase it was in better condition, but becuase of this apparent internal difference I just instead re-assembled the century with its correct head. (as otherwise, in theory, putting the other head on would actually in effect cause a reduction in the compression ratio.)
