Saving Old Seagulls

Aluminum is a good saltwater resistant material. So why are Seagull wet end parts painted?

Originally they were polished. If you just left them rough cast they would inevitably retain all manner of muck and oil and salt. Paint fills in the pores and keeps them fairly smart.
