Saving Old Seagulls

Greetings and happy 2008. I just purchased a 1972 Forty Plus long shaft for $86.00 (43 pounds) off Ebay. The person who owned it lived close and didn't want to ship it so I got it at a great price. The engine is in good shape. There wasn't any spark but a few minutes setting the points correctly and spinning the flywheel got everything working. My biggest problem has be trying to locate 140 wt. gear oil. NAPA and the other auto parts stores carry 85-140 wt. but not straight 140 wt. I'm going to try and locate some near my lake house which is in a rural portion of Georgia. I'm thinking that farm machinery stores might be a better place to look. Once I get the proper oil I'll try starting it. I carb looks clean and I don't want to remove it unless I have to.

This list has been very helpful to a new Seagull owner. This is the second Seagull I've owned. I had a Silver Century back in 1975 that came with a daysailer. It ran great. I wish I still had it.

Any other Seagull owners in the southeast US?

Try vintage car clubs and places that restore vintage cars as the oil is used a lot in differentials and gearboxes in the old vehicles.

You can usualy buy a small amount on ebay as well.
have you checked the level in the box then?

They may have to special order it. That's how I got mine from NAPA:

Stalube SAE 140 GL4 gear oil

NAPA carries it but will have to order it from the main warehouse - I doubt they have it in the local store

I live in Tallahassee, FL and have a GALLON of 140 wt that I bought from a local parts house. It's enough to last me forever, probably. I own a Forty Plus. If you can't find any in Atlanta, I could send you some.

In Australia you can get the proper 140 oil for seagull gearboxes from Penrite.
I have 2 gallons, enough to last this and the next life.
