Looking good!

Which parts will you varnish? Casings, cylinder? Have never used varnish on a seagull but understand it can help protect their finish for quite some time.

Well the whole thing actually.

When I say varnish it is boiled linseed oil...old fashioned base for all sorts of paints and coatings with good reason.

I use BLO on old hand tools restoration. Wood handles and blades like axes, shovels etc etc.

When I say "oven" I do not mean bake the poor thing...just enough to form a skin of oil wiped on thinly with a rag. Below 120C. Drying not cooking aye. I have an electrical oven which is a drying heat...I have no idea about gas? Final hardness in sunshine (yes Perth is getting some now). Another light applications over say twice in 6 months should protect from anything except my local council but that is off topic

The finish is a satin look. Too thick and gets patchy glossy.

Just a wee bit every now and again.

This use of BLO is for something that should be preserved as a well cared for survivor.

Then again each to their own. I have done "shiny restos" before.

Having Fun

Ok

The hard bits about to be attended to. Wash down with ATF and kerosene. then a couple of towels soaked in same and into a black plastic Sulo Bin liner.

Leave in increasing sunshine for a week, maybe two, and apart it will be.

The transom clamps will be brought back to dogleg with some reverse brazing after that.

Nearly forgot... The white bush (or something) staring me in the face.

All coming apart soon for inspection and will find out I expect.

Any info appreciated in the short term.

Interesting! Wonder if just a spacer added at some point? To what end no idea.

Looks like a century in the background, two rebuilds at the same time? :)

Friend shortened it and no cooling flow.

Sorting it out ATMO....got everything adjusted to pump 6ft (Leg only with high speed drill)

Weather warming up so on with the power head and try. Could be combustion leakage. We shall see.

If that case is his problem aye.

Looking very nice. A great feeling getting the power unit back together!

I see an upside-down 9897 stamp on the upper crankcase half. Not sure I’ve notice a stamp there before on other motors. Is this normal for the AD range and/or others produced around that time?

Not too sure that crankcase number but have seen similar random.

Usually a factory refurb job has matching stamps.....the gearbox has matching stamps.

Edit; There is the same number of the cases on the prop......interesting.

Continuation.

Starting to find a bit of "other's involvement". So far nothing of detriment.

Gearbox is very cool.

Bush in torque tube needs some attention however.

I think that my posts should end.

SOS has lost the "interaction" that we all enjoyed.

Sad really.
