Looks like they had that poor woman carrying that motor all over the place ! What is the purpose of the exhaust vent ?

The exhaust vent was there to aid starting, by reducing back pressure. The feature was removed from later seagulls of course.

This is what the junction of Alma Road and Whiteladies Road looks like now. I wonder where the shop was?

All Seagulls have exhaust back pressure holes, it was only the pre 1937 cast exhaust models had the provision for closing these vents to keep the exhaust noise down!
The straight exhaust models used the tell tail water to provide the same function.

Thanks for the information , I have an obscure outboard here called 'Weekend' , made in Paris , it also has this feature and I couldn't figure out its purpose .

Britannia outboards had a similar feature too.
