Saving Old Seagulls

Today I acquired F670E9 . It has the totally enclosed recoil same as the late Seagulls . Could this be a retro fit or is it an oddball ? The engine identifier is coming up with 1969 .

Hope you don't mind me jumping in, I've got a forty featherweight with normal rope pull start, anyone know if you can fit a lanyard kill switch on these, it's the electronic ignition

No you can't.

If it is substantially different, then maybe it is electronic as you say and maybe you can add a kill-cord but only if the CDi unit has two wires coming out of it which will only be apparent after removing the flywheel. Have fun doing that.

That sounds nuts. I love it. I'll come and see that in action, I'm not far from Sheppey. Your ignition is a MK4, it is possible to fit a kill cord. However you will need the right sort of CDi unit as previously mentioned and some destructions from someone who knows more about electronics than me...can we have a picture of the kayak and the straitjacket you wear while using it please?

That's a Wipac CDI electronic Ignition, But I need to see the outer rim of the flywheel to establish exactly which type of ignition you have.

Only with the white Wypac Mk3 does the owner get the ability to add a stop button wire, but quite a few had them, but many of the black Wipac Mk4's had the addition of this wire when used on the 170/125 & on the whole QB range, though it might have removed for reliability when no button was fitted, it's not possible to retrofit one as the terminal is encapsulated.

Steve the serial number would remove a lot of confusion.

Just remove the nut holding the rope sheave in position & remove it, remove the flywheel cover, Hey Presto flywheel is visible.

Removing the flywheel is a 4 handed job & is covered in heaps of old posts.

How can you be sure that's a Mk4 Martin?

I've seen the top nut under the black cover, do the 4 bolts under the shroud need removing too ?

aw ok you win , can't tell till the flywheel is examined. Tell us how to install a kill-cord Charles. I have a ignition module from a 170 not currently in use...

Maybe the four nuts will need to come off eventually but concentrate on the big one at the top first.

Yup, bonkers. The outrigger will complete the ensemble nicely. If your CDi has the wire Charles talks about then it will be right cheap (probably). Otherwise issagonna costyamista.

The 4 bolts retain the cover, I think that's a 1981 electronic featherweight with a Bing carb, you could be lucky it might be a Mk3 that year.

Replace the gear oil ever time you use it!
