Saving Old Seagulls

Can anyone advise what the pocess of final painting of the Century was?

As in was the drive leg fully assembled or was it painted in parts then assembled?

Was the oil filler plug in the gear box left out or was that painted over?

Please advise if possible?

The picture shows the drive leg stripped of all paints.

As far as I know it was painted as assembled parts then the filler plug was changed out for a clean one, the bolts were also changed.

I did as you indicate, used three coats of etch primer and then a similar amount of coats of silver.

The motor can be reassembled soon.

Did they ship the motors without oil in the gear box?

This motor is now assembled, I can do a test start in the morning?

There is a fat spark from the Wipac coil to the plug, plus the compression feels tops

I would say the gearbox was painted assembled, I have a new in box motor and you can see where they masked off the chrome drive tube.
And they were shipped with no oil in the gearbox

My thanks to the forum members who gave me advice on the painting.

The engine has since been test run on the bench and now wet run it a wheelie bin test tank.

All is good, this engine has not run for say five years.


It started on the second pull of the start cord, there was a slow running of the cooling water, I switched off the motor, then blew the water cooling lines out with a high pressure air line, on restart the cooling water flow was normal.

Thanks, this engine is about forty five or forty six years old, it runs as if it was new?

I have a 10:1 petrol to 2 stroke Shell Gemini mix right now, I made a note that it will run on a 16:1 mix if I adjust the needle, I need to check Johns SOS site out to confirm that ?

I swopped all of the nickle plated nuts and bolts out around the crank case and fitted re chromed ones, the chrome down tube was not perfect but good enough to reuse.

The large down tube was annodised, it looked a bit crappy but cleaned up in the blasting cabinet well enough.

The fuel tank is the original it still has parts of the British Seagull transfer on it, I think I will leave that as it is?
