Saving Old Seagulls

Just curious ....
When did Seagulls start to be transported in the box ?
What kind of timber was used ?

Are you going to make some? SD's '42 to '46 were crated. Marstons?

I doubt that I could find matching Pine in Australia, but will get a construction list with dimensions of each piece, including bolts, nails and screws.

It is worth mentioning that not all the later model motors came in crates. I have receipt for a motor that came tucked inside a sales brochure i bought.
This receipt says (received in good condition, uncrated) it is then signed by the customer. I believe it is for a CPC or a LLS, i wont post a photo for copyright reasons.

Here's one for an OJ.

The motor is disassembled for storage and transit. With petrol tank, tiller arm and carburettor removed it makes for a compact package. The removable box for the carburettor has a cleverly thought out slot to position the throttle cable just correctly to prevent damage.After a great deal of thought, for me the jury is still out on the question of originality and authenticity. This case is a substantially built and cunningly designed bit of kit and it still bears handwritten destination labels and notes.
The motor still has associated correspondence, brochures, service reminders etc. It has an advance/retard magneto fitted by the factory.

That a nice thing to go with an engine! I have never seen a seagull box in the flesh, but I have a very old box with a Britannia Light Twin in it

Great thread! Nice to see so many boxed gulls.

Interested to understand the above comment a little better. Does this mean that someone has already offered that information (plans?) to you or that it's something you are working on yourself?

I'm measuring a complete box by myself. I did have the ides to sell one of my 102s (dis-assembled) in a plywood box, but now am contemplating a scaled timber box in the Seagull style.
