ht leads . does it need replacing

Post by seeva »

ive recently picked up a forty plus in reasonable condition which im going to use on my little dinghy in the canals . ive cleaned out the entire fuel system stripped the carb etc but cant get a spark.now this may be a simple question but if i do a continuity test on the cable should a small charge run the entire length ? i ask this as mine doesnt ,i have a 2inch tube part way down the cable with erie ss 5000 (then an ohm sign) written on it ,the current does not flow through this . i wodered if this is an integral part of the ht lead or maybe a repair from before which has now failed . any ideas. andy

Hello Andy.

any lead with a suppressor in it is over 25 years old! As Seagull suggested replacing the leads every year... Think it's time for a new one! I normally say every 5 years....

At £11.75 for an HT lead and new style cap... ( your cap is 25 years old too I suspect!) Not a fortune to pay...

The supressors are OK till they get damp, then they give all problems. See my comments on the FAQ page about testing for sparks etc...

All the bits in stock. mail me for prices on other parts,

Regards,
John
