Saving Old Seagulls

is the oil to petrol mix for a 170.. 25 to 1 .
i have had this for quite some time now and went out to the shed and thought i will have a go at this and blow me down it started with two pulls.
did not let it run long as i just had straight petrol going through it .
so if i get the oil and petrol mix right think i will try it out on the sea with my 17 foot 6 inches. 6feet beam. boat should push it along this i intend to use as my reserve to get me out of trouble. the boat is a morebass. what sort of speed do you think it will achive.thanks.

Hi Barrie - mix for a 170 is 25:1 - I run mine at 20:1 hoping the big end will survive as long as possible - you may have seen elsewhere on this site that big ends are a weak point on these engines.

They are a powerful engine - rated at 7.5 HP, which may be true, but they certainly put out power comparable to a modern 5 - 6 HP engine, so will push your boat no problem. Mine certainly makes my 10 foot aluminium dinghy fly!
Do you need a longshaft engine for out boat, and is your 170 a longhshaft? I think most of them were, as they were often used as auxillaries on sailing boats etc. Rick

yer it is a long shaft .i was told as long as you shut the revs right down before comeing out of gear the engine should be ok it is if the revs are right up on a long run as well.that can cause the damage.but i will only be useing it as spare and maybe just now and then just to keep it going .and then only for about 1 mile at a time so hopefully i should be allright with it.
