I'm not saying Akaroa is taking the mick, but when you add in EBay's fees that are also on the postage & then paypal's share you'll find your paying 15+% more, but rest assured the UK taxman is getting none of EBay's share!

I'd go as far as suggesting to anybody to enquire to SOS before buying from ebay. His advice comes for free, and is generally very correct too.

The same piston rings are £11.50 on SOS website. Plus John provides this forum for us at his expense.

Yes John is really good, each time I have called he has had what I needed and at a great price, this time Tam came to my rescue, thanks mate
I finally freed the other ring without breaking it, a long soak in a glass of nail polish remover (mix of Acetone and water) did the trick, I can't get it off the piston though, I think if I prise it apart I am going to snap it, The amount of dried gunge under the ring surprised me, black, white and grey dust is what I am seeing, I think I'll just keep turning the ring and brushing it out with a fine wire brush, that might be a safer option, I guess I will need to remove all the dirt to stop it wearing the piston when I put it back together

Yes, they are very brittle, best to leave them fitted. I find gentle heat and WD40 will normally allow them to free off.

Just replace the rings Steve. Dont be scared if you break 'em either taking them off. It's the putting back on that you need to be careful with :P

As per my previous pm's, these piston rings are cheap enough and will give you peace of mind knowing that these have been replaced.
It makes sense if you've got this far with the strip down and inspection NOT to cut corners with the re-build.
Last thing you want is to spend a lot of your spare time just doing the very basics and still not have the engine running all because of a few corners being cut. Do the job right the first time around and leave nothing to chance.

Any problems, you know where to find me :P

Yes Jon, I can see just how difficult putting them on is going to be :|
not a lot more to do before I start rebuilding it, I need a warmish day to Zinc prime the Gaskets and I also want to get into the gearbox and flush out the old oil and replace that, I have a day off next Tuesday with luck it might have warmed up by then.

I find it's easier to put them on than take them of i tend to put one on from each end. yes further to travel but nothing in your way. ..china...

Thanks Tam those rings arrived today and I got them on without breaking them, oil tip worked really well
Then I Zinc primed the gaskets after rubbing them down, I rubbed down the block to remove all the old silicone
I put the Crankcase back together with a smear of Loctite SI5990 RTV Silicone instant gasket, hand tightened and I will get a spanner to them later.
I also drained the gear box and refilled with EP 140
Getting back to the crankcase I'm guessing I should put a little 2stroke oil in before I connect the head?

A wee bit of lube will do it the world of good. A dry rides no good to no one china....mind and line up your rings and squeeze them in gently and don't sneak them...good luck. ..

I have added a chart to convert spanners between MM,AF,BSW and BSF.

viewtopic.php?f=2&t=6040&p=53547#p53547

1/4 BSF is not the same as 1/4 BSW, but I guess you have already found that out. That would make me a bit :x  too.

But 1/4 Whitworth is the same as 5/16 BSF & 3/16 = 1/4 BSF.

So your socket set is perfectly OK!

That's what I thought after reading up on here, but so far I've not found a socket that fits anything on either the crankcase, head or even the fuel tank.
starting to look like my sockets are a pup
