Is it possible to change the Amal416 carb on a century efnrl seagull. And if so, what type of carb would people recommend ? Thanks.

Why would you want to change the 416 & what are you trying to accomplish?

I have a recondititioned villiers, and was just wonderng if the engine would benefit from a new carb. That said it looks like the the old carb has a bigger outlet ( the bit that goes on to the block), so I thinkthat answers that . Thanks

Unless you are heading down the "modify and race" route Kevin, i think you'd be wasting your time. (and you've worked out a villiers will not fit)
The 416 is an excellent carb. Nothing really wrong with the design of it at all. All i would do is clean your current carb fitted onto the EFNR and test it out on the water. Fairly bullet proof these carbs.
I have an EFNRL myself and it has a 416. Goes well for what it is. (perhaps even slightly better than my WSPC with the older 46n carb)

I think my problem is, I am more used to the modern outboards. Still trying to get used to getting back to basics.

Think of a seagull more like a tractor and not a sports car.
Not fast, but very dependable.
There's more to see when you're only doing 6mph

As another happy ENFRL owner, its probably as close to the perfect seagull as we will ever get.

stick with the 416 a1 carb but give it a good clean, and you will get all the power the engine will give and it wont be finicky to start or run like, those high strung modern outboards. that need a new impeller every season.
I was asked by a chap at the boat ramp how often i changed the impeller in my seagull 102, i told him it was only 50years old, so it was still the origional. it could wait till it was at least 65.
Though always Run the fuel out of the carb when you finish for the day, and you be right next time.
