Saving Old Seagulls

Hi guys whats the trick for removing these damed dover grips tried soaking/boiling/wd40 and the rest. Still won't budge after all its only cardboard

Must be glued its been in water for months think i might just shorten tiller to suit FV that should do the trick hopefully it will be same diameter. ...

I used a heat gun on one a few years back.
Heated very gently. I could still just touch it.

Found it was glued with some sort of epoxy.

But i had another if i stuffed it up.

When I removed one by boiling water it turned white and could not be resurrected.
so if they are on they are one for good and if they are not I try to locate another tiller with one already fitted.

also there seems to be several different styles of grip so what is correct for what motor or period is debatable. I know Jeremy has done some research into this....

Definitely a dover grip for anything made from 46 up to the mid 50's. As long as it says "dover" on it, you know it's the correct one.
All of the "little model 40" range were fitted with these grips as well as ALL of the 102's from 46 up to the mid 50's. (sadly, not all 102's still have the original grip fitted these days)

As for removing them, i boil them in a pan of water for at least 20 mins which should soften the cardboard material and any glue used in the original assembly process. They are stubborn at times, and if your unlucky they will diss-colour slightly. Getting the thing off without breaking it is tricky.



I'm getting slightly worried now as i've not heard from Jeremy in quite a while now. He and i have talked about literally loads of stuff in the past both FV related and 102. I just hope nothing bad has happened to the chap.

I am still here, but have got over involved in non- Seagull activities. It will pass. Was out on the river a couple of weeks ago with FV2821, so the old things are still active - unlike me!
