Rusty magneto

I have a magneto with mild rust on the 'clean' face - which I guess fine emery paper will cure - but also rust on the painted body. This is more severe although the laminations appear sound still. I have read a thin coat of varnish can be used safely on magnetos to give rust protection - is this true.

Secondly I have painted flywheel with Hammerite smooth - including the inside without giving thought to how Hammerite (which seems to contain something metallic) might interfere with magnets. Do I now need to remove said paint from magnet area?

Thx

Hi Revoli

Yes you should spray an ignition when it is all fettled and working to the best that you can achieve. Clear semi gloss acrylic from a spray can is what I use.

Make sure the points cover is on of course. Use just enough... do not drown the assembly.

Painted magnets if your thing or a Wipac thing is OK.

There are no metals in Hammer Tone paint.

Obviously...do not paint the points cam...

This is ignition from AC17964.......previous post about the Old Bloke somewhere. Adds to the wow factor in lifting the flywheel plate for interested lookers aye!

Excellent advice and pic. Many thanks. Glad I checked now before I started reassembly. I had firmly put my acrylic lacquer spray away as had read that it is not happy with oil and petrol however I do not propose to rinse this in petrol too often (although in flight refills....)

Thx :P
