"IT"s running, now best way to shut IT down?

Jeese! I look and I'm all over this forum like a bad rash!
So, I re-rung my '75 Silver Century. WSL104FF 5
Fired it up last night, (had a heck of a time, many pulls). (in a garbage can of water 1/2 " above pinch bolts, no prop)
Start it the way it says here, full throttle, (tried 3/4 a few pulls, 1/2 a few, choke on, choke off), choke on, tickle carb.
Ran it maybe 1/2 hour. all different rpm.
Re-torques the cube and head bolts, let it cool and fired it again (many pulls-again?)
Going from job to job today, passed by the house, heard "IT" calling my name, (actually bought a fresh D-16 plug for it), so I HAD to stop and run IT again.
Fired it up, again many pulls.
Now, I have the tank off (painted it) and a turkey baster shoved in the fuel line to feed fuel.
Carb is spotless, jet clean and clear. Fresh gas made up last night. Points cleaned, gaped, nice blue spark, old spark plug, D-21 and today new one D-16, new spark plug wire.
I HAVE been running it out of gas when I'm done playing.
I also think I need to "Tickle" the carb more.
I "Tickle" it for a few drops, maybe I need to do more?
Maybe I should not run it outta gas?
What IS the best way to shut these motors down??

Further tests...............
Left it with fuel in the clear fuel line, (remember tank is off, I have a turkey baster shoved in the hose and pour fuel in that).
I read here (not in the "tips") to put the throttle at 1/2, not WOT
I "tickled" the carb a few seconds, instead of "as soon as the fuel comes out of the "tickle plunger" stop, (like I used to on my BSA).
Choke on
1 pull and it fired!
Either it's happy at that setting or it just wanted to tease me.
Why do I run the carb dry?
I've only been playing on the water a few years, but when I'd just shut an O.B. down, the waves would bounce the motor and boat, flood the carb., or I'd tilt the motor and have fuel dripping out the carb.
I've always turned the fuel shut off, off on my bikes when I've stopped, to keep them from flooding, ( the ones who were prone to).
So, that's why I do it.
Is it right? I dunno, the "normal" outboards I've had, always fired right up after running dry, choke, put the throttle to the "start" mark, pull.
