This looks un-molested, and looks like a genuine river motor.

Not sure tank is correct, should it have plane ends?

Might be worth a punt, coil could be dead.

I cant buy any more featherweight/minus motors.

Yes, it looks like a mid series SJM. Wonder what the serial number is?
It has the 'earlyish' pump housing but later slotted gearbox and as you say the SEAGULL tank - the (very?) early SJMs were plain.
The transom bracket has the raised portions to dig into the transom but with the security bar on the starboard side.
The only transom brackets that I have seen with the security bar on the starboard side have the extra half round area and without the raised portion.
Is the transom bracket on this engine very common? What is yours like, Bruce?

looks to be just about right to me JEZZA

SJM's went right up to 67 (when the wipac ignition first came along)
The lower leg looks right for it's age (slotted gearbox AFTER 1957) i've never been able to work out the pump housings yet but it looks ok.

I was actually looking at something else........... perhaps a bit more interesting than a 40- variant.

no , i was looking at what looks to be a "bitsa" of some sort but definitely an early(ish) 40 series.

i look past all the dirt and grime and odd bits that shouldn't be on there. wink wink

Yes, nothing seems to be wrong with the SJM - seems correct.
I was just interested in the transom bracket. Have you any brackets exactly the same as that ie raised portion to dig into the transom and with the security bar on the starboard side?

This was a rather in depth rebuild back many years. I even asked John to provide a genuine new exhaust tube for it?

John had one!

I use it when I can. The tank still remains as......

Originally it did not have any lettering on the flywheel cover at all.

The transom pin clamp was Port.

Else the same.

Nice little motor BRUCE, if a teeny weeny bit "modernised" in certain areas.

I must admit, i have a place in my flock for these little fellers.

Kinda cute aint they. (a bit easier to use than a heavy old 102)

Here is my SJM for comparison. It is SJM 2121 D7 from April 1967. Bought new for me by my father (for passing an exam!) during the summer hols of 1967. I still have the receipt and handbook.

It is totally original, as it left the showroom, with the exception of a new HT lead and cap, replaced when John serviced it in 2008 (original kept).

Last saw action at the 2009 Seagull Flocking at Fambridge on the River Crouch.
