Can anybody identify this outboard?

Got this without a tank, any idea's as to what it is like, also how could I go about dating it please?

1 1/2 Hp, 56cc, early to mid 1960's.
Kidney shaped pressed steel tank that is very prone to damage & rust.

You might well have to buy a complete motor to get a tank, the tiller arm should be a bit easier to find.

What does it say on the rope sheave?

It says nothing at all, the only marking on it is a number stamped into it 5722 !!!???

I'd say Coventry Apex too, though the puffin is similar. Keep your eyes open on ebay, occasionally one will come up for sale, not expensive.

Similar but with a lot of changes, another 22cc, Zenith carb, brass tank.
Yours is the only one I've heard of without the model type being cast into the rope sheave.
If you remove the head, could you measure the bore & stroke.
Also exactly where on the crankcase is the serial number stamped?

That engine number location would imply it's not an Apex, as they stamped the number just above the seam between the two crankcase halves, that number is where Mallard numbers were stamped, but all the ones I've seen had Mallard on the rope sheave, I've just noticed that yours has the short waterjacket Mallard cylinder.
So all this would seem to indicate that you've got a Mallard, made at some point between 57 & 60, 54.5 cc, 1.5 hp @3300 revs, 16 : 1 fuel mix, still with the same rubbishy kidney shaped steel tank.

I think Charles could well be right.The smaller Mallards have a tubular tank and the poppet valve instead of the carb. I have two of those. This would be the larger model then.

The poppet valve model produced between 50 & 55 ish was the first itteration of the Mallard, due to poor sales it was re launched in 57 as the Mallard with a 1.75 hp upgraded powerhead & prop.
