Saving Old Seagulls

I've uploaded photos to Yahoo of my latest restoration a 1973 WSPCL.

I realize some may not approve of minor changes I've made - a black flywheel - I don't like hammerhead paint; and the polished carburetor; it was good enough on my BSAs and Triumphs years ago at show and shines.

I have a tank decal to be added, but I'm still testing the black paint manufactured by Bill Hirsch Auto. I'll be posting, what I believe will be very promising results, as soon as my test is finished.

Hi Charles.

Let me go back about four decades if I may. I was setting up a BSA for a Show n Shine and someone (long since forgotten and very likely now deceased) told me that under all that battleship gray of the carburetor and engine side panels was the most beautiful aluminum, even better than double chrome as seen on many antique machines. He also gave me a bar (about 3"x3"X10") of jeweler's rouge. I've no idea if his terminology was correct, however all brass and aluminum parts buffed on a high speed buffing wheel in conjunction with this polishing compound create the most amazing results. parts like those in the photos (after working on numerous engines I'm still using the original bar). Several hours were spent polishing the parts, although this could be speeded up considerably by the use of a larger grinder.

you can still get that polishing compound, I am currently looking into powder coating to restore the tank.
I used the method on calvnised buckets and it lasted really well only problem is the company is in sussex and I now live in fareham I will have to drive up and see them.
