Camera question

I have a Nikon D40 and a Sigma DG 70 - 300mm lense which i bought about 5 years ago. The problem iv always had is that the camera does not auto focus with the Sigma lense. I remember the guy in the shop telling me that the lense would auto focus with the camera but this was not the case and ever since iv always been manually focusing the pictures...
