I am having problems with larry's 2.3 johnson, it is a 1996 model, it is very hard to start when cold but when started and warmed up it will go 1st pull every time, if let sit till the next day it won't start again, the carb has been cleaned, the filter in the tank cleaned, a new plug that has a good spark. When trying to start the motor from cold I checked the plug and it was dry. any ideas? It will start on aerostart but won't keep running, I took the carb off and sprayed it straight into the motor and it started without the carb.

Looks like you have answered your own question Chris. Carb problem.

Could be leaking crank seals, has the motor done loads of hours ?

it hasn't done a lot of hours, when it finally starts from cold it runs perfectly and is easy to restart, Would anyone know what the correct float setting is or how to check the crank seals or how to convert it into a seagull

Don't know anything about motors that new, but is the ignition baseplate linked to the throttle.

I think your going to have to strip that carb again, without having the carb infront of me it's hard to guess, is it a Warlbro or Tillotson type butterfly/pumper, don't some of them have a cold start enrichment hole just behind the choke butterfly, that could be obstructed.

Choke plate is probably not sealing well enough to restrict the air flow

motor is running properly again, gave the carb a good clean, the choke wasn't sealing properly and the needle and seat wasn't sitting right which was fixed after the clean, it starts 1st pull cold again and runs properly
