Carb compensator necessary?

Hello, I am putting together a shopping list for my 40+ and was wondering should I add a carb compensator as mine's missing. I've ran it a few times in the wheelie bin - starts first pull and seems happy enough from low to mid revs. I haven't pushed it into the higher rev range yet though. I'm sure the compensator was put on there for a good reason but is it really necessary? Many thanks!

Yes you do need it. Its a different story once its on the back of a boat. They just dont rev without one on there.And they give a huge flatspot.

Hello, thanks for the replies. I see that in addition to the standard compensator there is also a storm cowl... Is it a replacement for the original compensator or is it an add on? I like the idea of it being unbreakable rubber but if its an additional purchase and could cause the engine to develop less power (due to more restrictive airflow) then I'll not bother. Would be nice to know the facts though.

Dont use one. They make the motor lack power bigtime. Its like leaving the choke on.

The storm cowl Is an add on, breakable plastic cover, never liked them myself.
