Hi guys, the fuel when turned on pours out the tickler hole, non stop. I can see lots of grit, is this probably the problem or should I be looking at something else?

Well lots of grit is a problem, as the carb needs to be totally clean to work properly. The grit could be the cause of the flooding issue, or perhaps you have a float that doesn't, or a needle with a worn seat area therefore not sealing properly.
I would suggest you start with a through disassembly and cleaning of the carb as well as the tank, and fuel delivery lines.

That may be happening because,
1. The floater isn't moving freely in the float bowl.
2. The floater isn't placed to the correct point on the needle. There is a specific point to be attached.
3. The floater has a hole and some fuel inside.
