Saving Old Seagulls

I have freed off a seized piston from a silver century block. (Thanks Paul!)
Now the matter is that the bore is not smooth. Honing will do the job or should I remove surface rust before honing? (How?)

Show us a good close pic of the bore. One with good light.

It's soaking in diesel. Every now and then I take it out and rub it with fine wire wool. That seems to remove rust/coke deposits but there are remains. When I take it out again I will try to get a picture.

You can use a bit of emery paper to rub the cyl out. Then use a cyl hone to finish it of. You dont need to go overboard with it. Its only a seagull remember, and if its running 10-1 it will be fine. If you dont have a cyl hone you can use another method.

I don't have a cyl hone but I was planing to get one. I have found locally for 7-11euros. What is the other method?

Just use a long drill bit or wood bore bit, and a scotch bride and wrap it around the bit. You may need to use 2 of them to fill the bore up and have a bit of pressure. Use plenty of WD-40 to keep it wet and use the drill as you are pushing it in and out to get a criss cross pattern. You can also use a bit of emery paper as well to have a perfect finish. Now having said all of this, You must be very careful that you dont over do it. Just tiny little bits at a time until the bore looks tidy.

I would get a proper honing tool as it will do a better job and evenly around the bore

If its a siezed and rusted bore i would just use the method i said because its half buggered anyway. I used this method on a chainsaw bore once because i could not find a hone small enough. Just ake it easy and all will be good. Its a seagull remember, You can use crude methods on a crude engine.

I will freak out with the Seagulls! Definitely I am interested in the seized silver century block but I have just received another pretty nice gull.. Check the other post..

The one that unsieze had run until seizure without cooling water? Even the crankshaft was dark brown, as if it had become glowing red from the heat at some point in its life.

I get the cyl hone tool and hone the rescued block. Nice result, there are some remains below the point that the rings reach so I won't bother with that anymore. I wouldn't like to over do it.
Pictures maybe tomorrow because the cylinder is enjoying its bath.. to remove the diesel.

Some scratches appeared on the direction that the piston moves. I can also feel them with my nail. More honing or scrap cylinder?
